What Is Netflix Identity & Commerce
Netflix is a retention-driven subscription business. Nearly all of its value is the recurring decision each member makes to keep paying every month. That one structural fact is different from a transactional marketplace like Amazon (maximize this order) or an ad-impression business like Meta (maximize monetizable attention now), and it changes what data science optimizes: less "win this transaction," more "raise the probability and value of the next renewal, sustained over years."
The Commerce domain owns every money-facing surface — acquisition and signup, plans and pricing, payments and billing, the ads-supported tier, partner and bundle distribution, and the full lifecycle of upgrades, downgrades, involuntary churn (failed payments), voluntary churn, and win-back.
The Identity domain is the newer, founding-team mandate and the reason this role exists. A Netflix account is not a person. One account holds several profiles, is shared across a household (historically well beyond it), on many devices. So Netflix cannot cleanly attribute behavior, preference, or value to an individual human. The goal — a unified, individual-level identity platform — is to resolve those signals into individual-level understanding, which is the foundation for personalization, ads targeting and measurement, household and extra-member management, fraud and account security, and a consistent cross-device experience.
Stage matters: Commerce is mature (marginal gains on enormous bases, heavy guardrails, rigorous experimentation), while Identity is explicitly 0 to 1 (limited priors, fast iteration, defining metrics that do not exist yet). Two recent forces define the modern context: the ads-supported tier (late 2022), which makes a pure subscription partly two-sided, and paid sharing (2023), the password-sharing crackdown via "extra member" slots — identity signals applied directly to commerce outcomes.
User Journey
Three journeys matter for this role.
Acquisition to first stream:
Commerce lifecycle for an existing member:
Paid-sharing / identity journey:
The biggest, most fixable leak is involuntary churn (renewals that fail on payment). The most delicate is household detection — a false positive annoys a legitimate traveler or multi-home member and risks churning a paying customer.
