Reddit — Consumer — Product Sense & Metrics
Role context: Senior Data Scientist, Consumer · Est. study time: 35 min · 4 practice questions
How to prepare for this role
Reddit's Consumer DS role is judged on defining engagement metrics that resist gaming (meaningful engagement + community health, not raw time), designing and meta-analyzing experiments, reasoning causally when you can't A/B, and understanding the create→curate→consume loop and new-user activation — communicated up to the C-suite.
The day-to-day is driving daily-active-unique (DAUq) and engagement growth through metrics design, experimentation (and experiment meta-analysis), and causal analyses for a community-of-communities. The instinct that separates strong candidates: refusing to optimize raw time/engagement (rage-bait inflates it while eroding community health), and reasoning about the whole create→consume loop, not just consumption.
Where to spend your prep time:
- Community/content product sense (this article) — the create→curate→consume loop, why meaningful engagement beats raw time, and new-user activation.
- Experimentation and causal inference — feed-A/B OEC design, experiment meta-analysis, community interference, observational causal. See the A/B Test & Causal Inference section.
- SQL and communication — be fluent in SQL, and practice turning an experiment or causal analysis into a C-suite-ready recommendation.
The through-line: grow DAUq + meaningful engagement, guard community health, and protect the creation the loop depends on.
What Reddit Consumer actually is
Reddit is a "community of communities" — 100,000+ interest-based communities (subreddits), ~121M daily active uniques, where users generate, curate (vote), and moderate nearly all the content. The identity to carry into every answer: a platform whose value is authentic conversation inside communities, where a small fraction create, more curate, and most consume — and whose growth is daily active uniques and their engagement. It monetizes via advertising (contextual/community targeting, ~90% of revenue) plus data licensing.
Two things make this different from a normal consumer-analytics job:
- The create → curate → consume loop. A minority of users create content, more upvote/downvote to curate it, and the majority consume (lurk). So consumption depends on the content supply creators and communities produce — a change that lifts consumption but discourages contribution or strains moderators starves the ecosystem. The Consumer DS reasons about the whole loop.
- Engagement must be healthy to be valuable. Reddit's value rests on authentic, trusted, civil conversation. Rage-bait and toxicity can spike short-term engagement while eroding the community health, trust, and moderator goodwill that make Reddit worth using — so engagement metrics travel with community-health guardrails.
