What Is Teamfight Tactics

Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is Riot's free-to-play, live-service auto-battler — an 8-player round-based strategy game where you draft champions and items and build a board that auto-fights the other seven players. It launched in 2019 inside the League of Legends client and now also runs cross-platform (PC + mobile) on one shared account. Its heartbeat is the "Set": every few months the game is re-themed with new champions, traits, and mechanics, resetting the meta and pulling players back for a fresh wave of engagement and spend.

The one structural fact that defines this role: TFT monetizes through cosmetics and expression only — never pay-to-win. That is a direct expression of Riot's top value (Player Experience First) and its stated preference for sustaining live titles over short-term monetization. Nothing you buy changes gameplay or competitive integrity; you buy identity and delight. So the job of the AXE (Acquisition, eXpression, Events) Insights pod is to grow sustainable revenue without ever touching fairness — because fairness is what retains the players who eventually pay.

What players actually buy: Little Legends (the collectible creature that represents you on the board, including randomized eggs — a gacha mechanic), arenas/boards, booms, and emotes (more expression), the per-Set TFT Pass / Pass+ (a battle pass with free and premium tracks), and limited-time event cosmetics. Purchases use Riot Points (RP), the real-money premium currency.

User Journey

Player lifecycle (free → monetizer):

Player lifecycle (free to monetizer). The hardest steps: the free to first-purchase jump, and retaining across the between-Set lull.

Biggest drop-offs: TFT's steep learning curve for new players; the free → first-purchase step (most players never pay); and the between-Set lull, where engagement and spend sag if the next Set doesn't pull players back.
