Roblox — Social — Product Sense & Metrics

How to prepare for this role

This is a social-graph growth DS role on Roblox's Social Connections team. It's judged on measuring social features where effects spread through the friend network, separating the causal value of a connection from selection, distinguishing meaningful connections from hollow ones, and protecting safety — via clean experiments, communicated to product leadership.

The day-to-day is growing user connections, facilitating co-experiences (playing together), and improving social content discovery through A/B tests and causal inference. Two instincts separate strong candidates: knowing that a user-level A/B is biased for social features (effects spread through friends), and refusing to optimize raw friend-adds because the value of a connection is co-play, not the count. Roblox's mission — connect a billion people with optimism and civility — makes safety a hard guardrail, especially given the young audience.

Where to spend your prep time:

  • Social product sense (this article) — the friend graph, the connect→co-play→retain loop, and why meaningful connections beat friend count.
  • Experimentation and causal inference — network interference (cluster/ego-cluster designs), and the causal value of a connection (selection/reverse causality). See the A/B Test & Causal Inference section.
  • SQL and pipelines — be fluent in SQL and big-data tooling (Spark/Hive/Airflow), and practice turning a social-graph analysis into a clear recommendation.

The through-line: grow meaningful connections and co-play, measure them correctly despite network effects, and never trade away safety. That matters more than any single method.

What Roblox Social actually is

Roblox is a 3D immersive UGC gaming/metaverse platform — around 132M daily users, tens of billions of engagement hours a quarter, roughly 2.8 hours a day per user (attention normally seen in messaging apps), skewing young. People come to "explore, create, play, and connect with friends" inside experiences built by creators. The identity to carry into every answer: a social platform where the core value is hanging out and playing together with friends, and where more social connection drives more engagement. Roblox's own algorithm boosts experiences with social activity, because friends playing together have more fun and stay longer. The Social Connections team owns the products that grow and strengthen the friend graph and the co-play that flows from it.

Two things make this different from a normal product-analytics job:

  • Value flows through the graph, so effects interfere. A friend connection is bilateral — it changes both people's experience — and social features (invites, "your friends are playing X," co-play) spread through the network. So a naive user-level A/B violates the assumption that a user's outcome depends only on their own treatment; treated users affect their control friends, and the estimate is biased. Social measurement is a network-experiment problem.
  • Connections are only valuable if they're meaningful. In 2025 Roblox split the graph into Friends (mutual, capped at 1,000 "to encourage real interaction") and Connections (one-way follow), and Friend Recommendations explicitly target high-quality connections. So the North Star is meaningful connections that lead to co-play, not raw friend count — a viral invite that inflates hollow adds is not a win.
